Like all Paul Thomas Anderson motion pictures, "Apparition Thread" is both unusual and entrancing. Daniel Day-Lewis, who has said that this will be his last screen execution, turns in a perfect work of art of sleek touchiness as 1950s form planner Reynolds Woodcock.
Set in 1950s England, it's a story in which little, at first glance, happens. Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) is a mold fashioner whose rich atelier (upstairs in his London town house) makes fastidiously developed, wonderfully controlled dress for affluent socialites. A youthful server, Alma (Vicky Krieps), gets his attention and turns into his dream and his sweetheart — to the unnerve of his imperious sister, Cyril (Lesley Manville), who maintains her sibling's business. Since this is a PTA film, the connection amongst Reynolds and Alma takes an odd turn. Wonderful articles of clothing are developed; eminent music is played; and three performers discreetly take us on a trip.
Daniel Day-Lewis, who has said that this will be his last screen execution, turns in an artful culmination of plush fractiousness. Wearing custom fitted suits and flawlessly tied ascots, his silver hair shaping twin altered commas over his forehead, he makes a man fixated on flawlessness. His voice is moderate, such as pouring cream, and loaded with drowsy disappointment; Alma both captivates and irritates him. ("I believe they're well and genuinely shaken now," he drawls, as Alma takes too long to hurl backgammon dice.) peacefully, his face recounts stories, in the case of looking at a lady or a dress.
